GameDiscoverCo has put together a list of best-selling video games of 2024 on Steam and consoles. Let’s take a closer look at the expected leaders and some surprise winners.

Top Steam games of 2024
Simon Carless didn’t share any specific sales estimates, but as he explained in the latest GameDiscoverCo newsletter, all games in the top-selling chart sold over 1 million copies. 14 of them sold over 2 million units, and four crossed the 5 million mark.
Unsurprisingly, Black Myth: Wukong became the top Steam release of 2024 by copies sold. Game Science didn’t disclose figures for Valve’s store, but the action game sold 10 million units across PC and PS5 in just three days (Steam likely accounts for the bulk of the total) and crossed the 20 million mark in its first month.
Wukong is followed by two other big hits, Palworld and Helldivers 2, which also took the charts by storm earlier this year. For example, Pocketpair’s Pokemon-inspired survival game surpassed 15 million units sold on Steam in its first month.
Chained Together, a co-op indie hit boosted by the popularity among streamers, took the 4th spot. There are no official sales figures, but given Carless’ note above, it can be assumed that Anegar Games’ title has sold at least 5+ million units since its launch on June 19.
Interestingly, Path of Exile 2 made it into the top 5 despite only coming out on December 6. Grinding Gear Games’ new action RPG has been showing some truly impressive results, surpassing 578k concurrent players at launch and still enjoying daily peaks of 400k+ CCU.
Below are the top 10 new Steam games of 2024 by units sold, according to GameDiscoverCo:

Overall, seven games in the top 10 are indie: Palworld, Chained Together, Liar’s Bar, Supermarket Simulator, Enshrouded, Manor Lords, and Buckshot Roulette.
When looking at indie games, there is a new trending microgenre described by Carless as a “intricate first-person store management sim.” Supermarket Simulator is the most prominent example, with another one being TCG Card Shop Simulator (#16).
The top 20 also includes titles like Warhammer 40k: Space Marine 2 (#11), Balatro (#12), Hades II (#15), S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl (#18), and Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 (#20).
In addition, GameDiscoverCo shared the top 20 Steam premium games of 2024 by gross revenue. The top 3 remained unchanged, but some higher-priced AA/AAA titles (and those with in-app purchases and DLC) rose into the top 10. The list includes Warhammer 40k: Space Marine 2 (#4), Dragon’s Dogma 2 (#5), EA Sports FC 25 (#7), Dragon Ball: Sparking! ZERO (#9), and Stalker 2 (#10).
Top-selling console games of 2024
- Electronic Arts’ sports games topped the charts on both PlayStation (EA SPorts FC 25) and Xbox* (EA Sports College Football 25). Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 ranked 2nd in unique players across both platforms.
*It is worth noting that GameDiscoverCo didn’t take into account its Game Pass estimates, where the most downloaded titles were Palworld, MLB The Show 24, Little Kitty, Big City, Hellblade II, and Indiana Jones.
- Sports titles dominated the console charts. They account for half of the top 10 on PlayStation: EA Sports FC 25 (#1), NBA 2K 25 (#4), College Football 25 (#5), WWE 2K24 (#8), and EA Sports Madden NFL 25 (#9). There are also five such titles in the top 10 on Xbox: College Football 25 (#1), EA Sports FC 25 (#3), Madden NFL 25 (#4), NBA 2K25 (#6), and WWE 2K24 (#8).
- Black Myth: Wukong, which ranked 3rd on PlayStation, is estimated to have attracted over 3.5 million PS5 players in China. According to Carless, this is more than 50% of the console’s sales in the country (“and they are all ‘gray market’, by the way”).
- Four PlayStation-published games made into the top 20: Helldiers 2 (#6), The Last of Us Part II Remastered (#10), Astro Bot (#15), and MLB The Show 24 (#17).
- All of the top 20 titles on PlayStation sold over 1 million copies, with 11 of them selling at least 2 million units and 5 crossing the 5 million mark. The situation on Xbox is much bleaker: only four games in the top 20 sold over 1 million units, with 11 crossing the 500k mark (the 20th best-selling title, TopSpin 2K25 sold less than 200k copies on the platform).
- When looking at top Nintendo Switch titles of 2024 by eShop downloads, the top 5 are The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom, Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, and Little Kitty, Big City, Princess Peach: Showtime!, and Super Mario Party Jamboree.
