Age of Mythology: Retold, a remake of the classic real-time strategy game, launched globally last week. It is time to take a closer look at its key metrics and player reception.

Age of Mythology: Retold peaks at over 25k concurrent players on Steam

Released on September 4, Age of Mythology: Retold received positive reviews from critics, with an average score on Metacritic of 83/100.

When it comes to player reception, the game currently has a 3.3/5 rating on the Xbox, with the main criticism being directed at crashes and multiplayer issues. Despite similar complaints, 90% of the 6,000 user reviews on Steam are positive.

However, most players criticized the Legacy Deity Portrait pack for the game. Microsoft’s decision to charge $6 for portraits from the original game resulted in a “Very Negative” (16%) rating. This DLC is also part of the Premium edition, but players generally feel that the company should have never made such content paid in the first place.

According to SteamDB, Age of Mythology: Retold quickly peaked at over 20k concurrent players and reached 25,879 CCU yesterday. It is worth noting that we don’t have data for the Xbox platform, where it is also available on Game Pass.

The original game’s Enhanced Edition has a peak of 11k concurrent players.

The 25.8k peak makes Age of Mythology: Retold the 3rd biggest World’s Edge game on Steam by this metric. It is behind Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition (38.7k CCU) and Age of Empires IV: Anniversary Edition (73.9k CCU).

Age of Mythology is also among the top 15 Xbox Game Studios titles by peak CCU, outperforming State of Decay 2 (22.7k CCU), Age of Empires III: Definitive Edition (20.1k CCU), and Ori and Blind Forest (13.1k CCU).

Thanks to pre-orders, Age of Mythology: Retold has been performing well on Steam even before its launch. It first appeared in the charts at #55 during the week of August 20-27, and was among the top 10 highest-grossing premium titles last week. So it will be interesting to see where it will land this time, especially given that it is a $30 release.

The original Age of Mythology, launched in October 2002, was developed by the now-closed Ensemble Studios. It received positive reviews and sold over 1 million units globally in its first four months.

World’s Edge, which was established by Microsoft in 2019, took over the remastered version after its successful work on the Age of Empires series. Creative director Adam Isgreen, whose portfolio includes various classic Command & Conquer games, led the development. The studio also traditionally enlisted the help of its long-time partner Forgotten Empires.
