Sony has created a new Preservation team. While it is unclear what specific goals this division will have, it most likely will focus on saving and maintaining old PlayStation titles.
This information appeared on a LinkedIn profile of Garrett Fredley, who has just joined Sony as senior build engineer for PlayStation (first spotted by VGC).
“Game Preservation was my first career passion,” he wrote. “It was my first foray into the world of Software Engineering / Dev Ops, and into a world that so many are unaware of. I was just a novice back then, contributing any way I could regardless of my inexperience. Now, I’m back to it, no longer the novice I once was.”
Fredley, who previously worked at Electronic Arts and mobile developer Kabam, will be in charge of hiring employees for the newly established team.
Last month, Sony announced a transformation of its PS Plus subscription. One of the new tiers will include classic games from PS1, PS2, and PSP, as well as some PS3 titles. So the establishment of the Preservation team seems like a natural move for the company.
Video game preservation is a subject to a lot of discussions in the industry. Back in February, Nintendo announced its decision to permanently close 3DS and Wii U eShops, which caused debates among developers and video game enthusiasts about the importance of saving old and classic titles.
