Hogwarts Legacy has been a massive success for Warner Bros. Discovery’s gaming division, also strengthening the franchise’s position. And the game has now reached a new impressive milestone.
As Warner Bros. told Variety, Hogwarts Legacy surpassed 30 million copies sold last month.
Launched in February 2023, the game generated $1 billion in less than three months, with 15 million units sold globally. As of January 2024, its sales have reached 22 million copies, meaning it took Hogwarts Legacy about eight months to sell another 8 million units.
The sequel is now a “very big priority” for the company. David Haddad, president of Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment, noted the next game could also feature some of the “big-picture storytelling elements” that will be part of HBO’s upcoming Harry Potter series.
Warner Bros. didn’t reveal any figures for other titles based on the Wizarding World IP. So the sales of Harry Potter: Quidditch Champions and the recently launched remaster of LEGO Harry Potter remain undisclosed.
Hogwarts Legacy is a huge win for Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment. It became the best-selling video game of 2023 in the US, breaking the domination of the Call of Duty franchise. It was also likely the biggest new release globally, as its closest rival, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, has over 21 million copies sold (as of September 30, 2024).
It is no surprise that Warner Bros. Discovery is betting big on the Hogwarts Legacy sequel, especially when looking at the commercial performance of its other video games. Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League resulted in a $200 million loss, with its development being marred by chaotic management and unfulfilled live service ambitions.
Hogwarts Legacy alone already looks strong against Warner Bros’ best-selling video game franchises:
- Mortal Kombat — over 80 million copies sold, with MK11 accounting for 15 million of the total;
- LEGO Star Wars — over 50 million copies sold;
- Batman: Arkham — over 30 million copies sold.
