Hogwarts Legacy has surpassed 22 million units sold, according to Warner Bros Interactive Entertainment president David Haddad. This makes it the best-selling video game of 2023.

Hogwarts Legacy tops 22 million copies sold, including 2 million sold in December alone

Haddad announced a new milestone in an interview with Variety, also saying that Hogwarts Legacy sold 2 million copies during the December holiday season.

“It brought Harry Potter to life in a new way for gamers where they could be themselves in this world, in this story,” Haddad said. “And that’s what the team at Avalanche set out to do when they were developing the game and I think that’s really why it resonated so well and remains the best-selling game of the year in the entire industry worldwide.”

The executive added that “that’s a position that typically is held by one of these incumbent’s sequel games,” so the company is proud that it has been able to top the charts.

Launched on February 10, 2023, Hogwarts Legacy received generally positive reviews from critics and players. It also peaked at over 879k concurrent players on Steam and became the top new release of the year by that metric.

In May, the game reached $1 billion in retail sales, surpassing 15 million copies sold across PC, PlayStation, and Xbox (it has since launched on Nintendo Switch). So it took around seven months to sell another 7 million units.

As of November, Hogwarts Legacy remained the best-selling game in the US year-to-date, outperforming other hits like Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, and Marvel’s Spider-Man 2. However, analytics firm Circana is yet to reveal its full-year data.

The global success of Hogwarts Legacy is also undeniable, but we still don’t know the exact sales of all of its rivals. For example, Tears of the Kingdom reached 19.5 million copies sold at the end of September.

Right now, Warner Bros. Games and Avalanche Software are working on the Quidditch title, which is currently in the beta stage. The Hogwarts Legacy sequel is also only a matter of time, given the game’s commercial performance.
