Shortly after the start of its first season, Marvel Rivals broke its concurrent player record. NetEase’s hero shooter continues to show strong retention.

Season 1 began on January 10, introducing a new battle pass, special event, two maps, and two characters from the Fantastic Four team. As a result, players flocked to Marvel Rivals over the weekend to try all the additions.

According to SteamDB, the game peaked at 644,269 concurrent users on January 11. This is up nearly 34% from its previous record of 480k CCU.

Launched globally on December 6, Marvel Rivals ranked as the fourth biggest release of 2024 by peak CCU, behind only Path of Exile 2 (578.5k CCU), Palworld (2.1 million CCU), and Black Myth: Wukong (2.4 million CCU).

So it is truly impressive to see the game not only retains its active player base, but also reaches new heights a month after launch. If NetEase does a great job with its content support and LiveOps, Marvel Rivals could become a long-running live service project.

The Chinese company hasn’t yet disclosed any figures for the game. However, Chinese media outlet GameLook estimated Marvel Rivals’ first-month revenue at over $136 million (across PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S). It also suggested that Steam is the main platform, with $54.5 million, while the China-specific client alone generated over $36 million.
