Alan Wake 2 has become the fastest-selling game in the history of Remedy Entertainment. The psychological horror title has sold 1.3 million copies in more than three months.

Alan Wake 2 hits 1.3 million copies sold, fastest-selling game by Remedy Entertainment

As Remedy Entertainment announced in a new investor update, Alan Wake 2 had reached 1 million copies sold by the end of December 2023. The game had sold another 300k units as of early February 2024.

The studio noted that Alan Wake 2 “sold over 50% more copies and over three times more digital copies in its first two months than Control did in its first four months.”

Remedy also announced that Control, which had a budget of €30 million, has surpassed 4 million units sold globally. It generated net revenue of around €100 million, with the studio being entitled to 45% of this amount.

Last year, Finnish analysts estimated Alan Wake 2’s total budget at €70 million, of which €50 million were game development costs. This makes it the most expensive title in Remedy’s portfolio. Despite the hefty budget, CEO Tero Virtala noted today that 1.3 million copies sold was enough to recoup a “significant part” of its development and marketing expenses.

Alan Wake 2 was fully funded by Epic Games, and Remedy will be entitled to 50% of the game’s net revenue after the Fortnite maker fully recoups all the expenses. So the studio has yet to see any money from its latest title, but it still has high hopes for it, saying that a “great game can generate excellent long tail sales, and we expect this to be the case with Alan Wake 2 as well.”

Launched on October 27, Alan Wake 2 received positive reviews from critics and players, also winning three Game Awards — for Best Art Direction, Best Game Direction, and Best Narrative. Remedy currently plans to release two paid DLCs for the game, which should also contribute to its long-term success.

The first Alan Wake game has sold over 3 million copies globally since May 2010, with its sales surpassing 4.5 million units when including DLCs.
