Starfield debuted at the top of the UK Boxed Charts, outselling other hit titles on the list. However, there have been bigger physical launches this year.

Starfield's physical launch is on par with Diablo IV, but behind other 2023 hits like Hogwarts Legacy, Zelda, and RE4

According to a new report from GfK (via GamesIndustry.biz), Starfield was the best-selling boxed game in the UK for the week ending September 9. It is worth noting that more physical copies were sold on Xbox than on PC.

As a result of Starfield’s full global launch, its premium upgrade, which allowed people to start playing the game five days earlier, fell from #7 to #34.

Below are GfK’s top 10 best-selling physical games in the UK:

  1. Starfield (new)
  2. Hogwarts Legacy (↓1)
  3. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe
  4. Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga (↓2)
  5. Mortal Kombat 11 Ultimate (↑1)
  6. The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom (↓2)
  7. NBA 2K24 (new)
  8. Grand Theft Auto V
  9. Fae Farm (new)
  10. Minecraft, a Nintendo Switch version (↓1)

GI.biz’s Christopher Dring also noted that Starfield’s physical launch was “almost identical” to Diablo IV. However, its debut figures were behind Hogwarts Legacy, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, Resident Evil 4, Final Fantasy XVI, and Dead Island 2.

Launched globally on September 6, Starfield also topped Steam’s Weekly Top Sellers chart. According to Bethesda, it was the studio’s biggest launch of all time, attracting over 6 million players. However, the real sales figures remain undisclosed, which makes it difficult to directly compare Starfield with other titles.

Over the weekend, the game reached a new peak of 330,723 concurrent players on Steam (via SteamDB). It is currently the fourth biggest release on the platform this year by that metric, behind Sons of the Forest (414k peak CCU), Baldur’s Gate 3 (875k), and Hogwarts Legacy (879k). In terms of peak concurrent players, Starfield also managed to top Skyrim, which has a peak of over 287k.

Despite a strong start, its rating on Steam has been declining since launch. It fell from “Very Positive” (86% positive reviews) on September 6 to “Mostly Positive” (77%). Many players complain about the game’s optimization and performance issues.
