Unity doesn’t see Unreal Engine as a real competitor. Not on mobile at least. This is according to Kim Jabal, chief financial officer at Unity, who thinks that companies using proprietary engines present a more serious challenge.
“We’re glad to have competition. But our real competition is actually businesses that still have their own home-grown tech. They’re building and maintaining their own technology,” Jabal said. “You saw our market share of the top 1,000 games. We have 71 percent. The next chunk of market share is China. Epic has a very small percentage of mobile. In other areas, like console and PC, we have very large market share there as well.”
Jabal admitted, however, that while Unity is focused on gaming, Unreal is present in other verticals, such as car and film industry.
