SMTV: Vengeance is an enhanced version of the 2021 title, which features new locations, enemies, and an alternative story route. Launched on June 14, it received positive reviews from critics, with its average Metascore ranging from 86 (Nintendo Switch) to 90 (PC). The original game, which was a Switch exclusive, has an average score of 84/100.
When looking at player reception, Vengeance currently has an “Overwhelmingly Positive” rating on Steam, with 95% of the 1,851 user reviews being positive. According to SteamDB, it also peaked at 21,749 concurrent players.
The game is now Atlus’ fourth biggest launch on the platform, behind Persona 4 Golden (29.9k CCU), Persona 5 Royal (35.4k CCU), and Persona 3 Reload (45k CCU).
Megami Tensei is a long-running video game franchisee, which dates back to the 1987 dungeon crawler Digital Devil Story: Megami Tensei. The first Shin Megami Tensei title came out in 1992.
Its spin-off, Persona, has grown into its own successful IP with lifetime sales of over 22.6 million units (as of March 2024). Excluding the Persona franchise, the global audience of the Shin Megami Tensei series has reached over 19 million (full-game sales and downloads of free-to-play titles) since 1992.
Sega has yet to update the figures, but the success of Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance may soon bring the total to 20 million units.
