Circana is back with its monthly overview of the US games market. September 2024 saw a sharp decline in hardware sales and the dominance of sports titles.

Circana: US games market generated $4.37 billion in September, with hardware sales down 44% YoY

EA Sports FC 25

  • The US video game market generated $4.37 billion in September, down 6% year-over-year. According to Circana executive director and industry analyst Mat Piscatella, the decline was driven a significant drop in hardware sales and a small dip in content.
  • Revenue from video game content reached $3.91 billion, down 3% compared to the same period last year.
  • Hardware sales fell 44% year-over-year to $251 million. Piscatella noted that this is the “lowest monthly hardware spend total for a September month since 2019 ($242 million).
  • Despite a 45% decline in US revenue, PlayStation 5 remained the leader in both unit and dollar sales. Xbox Series X|S (-54% YoY) ranked 2nd in dollar sales, while Nintendo Switch (-23%) was 2nd in units sold.
