Final Fantasy VII Remake has reached a new milestone three years after its launch. Let’s take a look at how its sales figures compare to both the original games and other notable installments in the franchise.
Square Enix shared the news on social media, saying that Final Fantasy VII Remake has now sold over 7 million copies (physical + digital units) globally since its launch on April 10, 2020. This also includes the Intergrade version that came out in 2021 on PS5 and PC.
“Seven’s the magic number. Thank you all for taking the journey with us,” the developers’ post reads.
In February 2024, Square Enix will release Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, a sequel to the successful remake that could add another several million copies to sales of the classic JRPG’s revision.

The original Final Fantasy VII came out in 1997, with the PS1 version reaching 9.8 million units sold globally by December 2005. At the time, these figures made it the best-selling game in the series. When taking into account all the re-releases and versions for different platforms, FFVII currently sits at over 14.1 million copies sold (as of January 2023).
Here are official sales figures for some of the other best-selling Final Fantasy titles:
- Final Fantasy XIV (2013) — over 24 million registered players (as of October 2021);
- Final Fantasy X + X-2 (2002) — over 20.8 million copies sold, of which 6.8 million units are the HD remaster (as of July 2022);
- Final Fantasy XIII + XIII-2 (2010) — over 11 million copies sold (as of September 2014);
- Final Fantasy XV (2016) — over 10 million copies sold (as of May 2022);
- Final Fantasy VIII (1999) — over 9.6 million copies sold (as of August 2019);
- Final Fantasy IX (2000) — over 5.5 million copies sold for the PS version alone (as of March 2016).
Earlier this year, Square Enix also announced that the entire Final Fantasy franchise has sold over 180 million copies globally. And this figure keeps increasing, as the Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster series recently topped 3 million units sold.
However, the Japanese publisher is now going through some turbulent times. It has lost nearly $2 billion in market value since June, as investors are concerned about Square Enix’s approach to game development. Not to mention that Final Fantasy XVI, which received positive reviews and sold 3 million units in its first week, didn’t meet the high end of the company’s expectations.
