Final Fantasy XVI had a pretty impressive launch in terms of copies sold, even though it falls short of the franchise’s record.

Final Fantasy XVI sales (3 million units) compared to previous games in the series

The news was first reported by Japanese outlet Gamer, but Square Enix later confirmed that Final Fantasy XVI has sold 3 million units worldwide in the first six days since its launch on June 22.

It is worth noting that earlier this month, Imran Khan reported that the publisher was allegedly “panicking slightly” over preorder numbers. So it is unclear whether Square Enix is satisfied with the 3 million milestone (it is still quite impressive given that FFXVI is currently a PS5 exclusive).

  • For comparison, Final Fantasy XV surpassed 5 million in day-one shipments, breaking a franchise record for launch sales. But it is worth noting that the game was available on both the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
  • Final Fantasy VII Remake sold over 3.5 million copies in just three days. It was a console exclusive at launch, but the PlayStation 4 had a much higher player base in April 2020  (110+ million) than the PlayStation 5 currently has (38+ million, as of March 31, 2023).
  • Final Fantasy XIII surpassed 1 million units sold in its first day (in Japan alone), and Square Enix initially shipped 1.8 million units to Japanese retailers.
  • In October 2022, Square Enix reported that the Final Fantasy series has sold over 173 million units in global package shipments and digital sales.
