What happened?

Lastimosa shared the news on Twitter, saying that it is time for him to part ways with the studio he has called home for almost 13 years.

“It’s bittersweet, and it’s time for me to take some much-needed time off,” he wrote. “I’m proud and honored to have shared this time with you all.”

It is unclear what Lastimosa will do next, but his departure follows reports that Electronic Arts has canceled an unannounced game based on Apex Legends and Titanfall franchises. As Bloomber reported last month, the project was directed by Mohammad Alavi until he left Respawn in early 2022.

Who is Ryan Lastimosa?

  • Prior to starting his game development career, Lastimosa worked as 3D modeler and artist and contributed to films like Æon Flux.
  • In 2006, he joined Infinity Ward where he served as senior artist on Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare and its sequel. He created vehicles, textures, concept art, and weapon models.
  • When Vince Zampella and Jason West left Infinity Ward and founded Respawn Entertainment in April 2010, Lastimosa took on this journey with them. He has been with the studio since its early days, working as senior and lead 3D arist on Titanfall 1-2.
  • In 2019, Lastimosa became 3D art director for Apex Legends, also mentoring other team members and establishing the pre-launch and post-launch development pipeline.
  • Since December 2022, he has been working as creative director on an unannounced single-player game. Lastimosa helped build a team and directed creative vision for the project.
  • There is not much known about it, but it was likely the Titanfall single-player title mentioned in the Bloomberg report.
