The creators of Rocket League announced that the title is going free-to-play in summer 2020. At the same time, it will become an Epic Games Store exlusive on PC.
Since the game came out in 2015, 75 million people have played it across PC, PS4, Xbox One, and the Nintendo Switch. On PC, the game has been available through Steam. Last year, Epic acquired Psyonix, the studio behind Rocket League, and now the game is changing both the monetization model and the store.
Players owning a copy of the game from Steam will still be able to play it after the transition. New PC players, however, will only be able to play Rocket League on Epic’s store.
“The core gameplay will remain the same, but we are refining the main menus to make exploring the game easier. Plus, we’re revamping and improving major features like Tournaments and Challenges, and introducing cross-platform progression!” explain the developers.
The Epic Games Store version “will be identical to the version found on other platforms, and will feature cross-platform play anywhere you play Rocket League, including between the Epic Games Store and Steam.”
