Today, March 26, Epic Games announced a new initiative. It is called Epic Games Publishing. That’s right. The Fortnite and Epic Games Store company is going to begin publishing games by third-party teams.
Among the first partners are genDESIGN , Playdead and Remedy Entertainment.
As a publisher, Epic Games promises the following perks to developers:
- complete creative freedom and IP ownership;
- full funding (the publisher will assume all development costs: from salaries for devs to marketing and localization);
- 50/50 profit sharing (once costs are recouped, developers get 50% of all profits or more).
“We’re building the publishing model we always wanted for ourselves when we worked with publishers,” said Tim Sweeney, Founder and CEO of Epic Games re the announcement.
Epic’s publishing effort covers multiple platforms.
In case you need a reminder, genDESIGN is a Japanese studio known for PS4 exclusive The Last Guardian, which has been in development for about 9 years. Playdead is a Danish company that has released two acclaimed platformers – Limbo and INSIDE. As for Remedy, it’s is a Finnish studio, best known for its Max Payne and Alan Wake franchises.
