Atari continues its spree of M&A deals. This time, it announced the acquisition of the studio Hipster Whale.

Crossy Road

Under the terms of the agreement, Atari will immediately pay $29.3 million for the developers, of which $26 million will be in cash, and another $3.3 million in shares. Additionally, they have promised to transfer an extra $10 million over the next three years contingent on Hipster Whale’s performance.

Atari also announced that after the deal is finalized, one of the founders of Hipster Whale, Matt Hall, will take the helm of its mobile division.

“Atari and Hipster Whale share DNA for classic retro-style gaming, and together we can lean on each other’s strengths — Hipster Whale for mobile gaming, and Atari for premium gaming — to significantly expand our mobile business,” commented Atari CEO Wade Rosen on the acquisition.

To recap, Hipster Whale is an Australian studio that was founded in 2014. That same year, it released the blockbuster mobile arcade game Crossy Road, which has amassed over 340 million downloads to date. The team’s portfolio also includes games like PAC-MAN 256, Disney Crossy Road, and Piffle (Hipster Whale was the publisher for the latter, which was developed by Mighty Games. — Ed. Note).

This marks at least the third acquisition by Atari in 2026. Previously, the company acquired the studio Implicit Conversions and the rights to the original games of the Wizardry series.
