June 2024 was marked by the launch of the Shadow of the Erdtree expansion for Elden Ring, which helped the game return to the top of the charts. Overall, video game spending in the US declined slightly year-over-year.

Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtre

  • Total US video game revenue reached $4.56 billion in June (-5% year-over-year), according to a new report from Circana’s Mat Piscatella.
  • In line with previous months, the biggest decline came in the hardware segment, with sales falling 37% year-over-year to $287 million.
  • Consumer spending on video game content surpassed $4 billion (-2% YoY), while sales of accessories fell 7% to $204 million.

  • Elden Ring became the best-selling premium game in June, jumping 8 positions from May. This is thanks to the success of the Shadow of the Erdtree expansion, which sold 5 million copies globally in just three days.
  • Piscatella noted that Elden Ring “was the best-selling game of June 2024 across each of the PlayStation, Xbox, and Steam ecosystems.”
  • Ghost of Tsushima, last month’s leader, dropped 11 spots to #12. The Kingdom Hearts: Integrum Masterpiece collection experienced the biggest spike in sales, moving up 396 positions to #3. Elder Scrolls Online returned to the top 20 after climbing 180 places, driven by the launch of the Gold Road expansion.
  • The two new titles on the chart were Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance (#4) and Luigi’s Mansion 2 HD (#8).
  • Helldivers is still the best-selling premium game in the US year-to-date, followed by Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III and Dragon’s Dogma 2. Interestingly, Elden Ring managed to enter the top 5, moving up 15 positions from May.

  • When it comes to player engagement, Fortnite continues to dominate consoles. On Steam, Elden Ring dethroned Helldivers 2, with Dark and Darker (#5) and Chained Together (#8) breaking into the top 10.

  • According to Sensor Tower, the mobile games market revenue grew 12% year-over-year. Monopoly Go! and Royal Match remained the top titles in the US by player spending. Roblox saw a 15% increase in revenue compared to May, with Pokémon GO’s revenue growing 22% thanks to its 8th anniversary event.
  • As for console sales, PlayStation 5 remained the leader in both unit and dollar sales. Nintendo Switch ranked 2n in unit sales, while Xbox Series X|S ranked 2nd in dollars. The same trend is observed throughout the entire first half of 2024.
