The Far Cry franchise is turning 20 years old later this month. To celebrate the anniversary, Ubisoft has revealed its lifetime audience. Let’s also look at data on the most successful games in the series.

Far Cry franchise hits 90 million players on its 20th anniversary, Ubisoft announces

In a blog post, Ubisoft announced that “more than 90 million players have experienced explosive, open-world conflict” since the first Far Cry game launched on March 23, 2004.

Pure sales of the franchise remain unclear, as the 90 million milestone also includes players who tried the games through various subscription services and other offerings. The last time the French publisher disclosed official figures was in September 2019, when it updated its website and revealed that the Far Cry series has sold over 50 million units globally since Far Cry 2.

In honor of the 20th anniversary, Ubisoft also launched a special sale, with up to 85% off the entire franchise until April 3.

What are the best-selling Far Cry games?

Note: Ubisoft doesn’t always disclose sales figures, especially for newer titles, preferring to report the number of players instead. This metric includes not only physical/digital copies sold, but also users who tried a game via subscription services like Ubisoft+, Game Pass, and PS Plus. Some data is also outdated due to a lack of new official announcements, making it impossible to estimate the lifetime sales of each game in the series.

The entire Far Cry franchise consists of more than a dozen releases, including various spin-offs and DLCs. However, there is not much data on them, with the exception of Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon, which reached 1 million copies sold in its first three months.
