The Resident Evil 4 remake, one of the most successful games of 2023, has reached a new milestone. It has now cemented its place among the best-selling titles in the entire franchise.

Resident Evil 4 remake hits 7 million copies sold, becoming 7th best-selling RE game

On March 13, Capcom announced that Resident Evil 4 had sold over 7 million copies globally in less than a year after its release on March 24, 2023.

The publisher last disclosed sales of the remake in its financial report for the nine months ended December 31, 2023, which said Resident Evil 4 reached 6.48 million copies sold. This means the game has sold over 500k units since the beginning of the year.

The RE4 remake is now the seventh best-selling title in the franchise. Below are the top 10 Resident Evil games by units sold, according to Capcom’s list of platinum titles* (as of December 31, 2023):

*The list takes into account sales of different versions of the same game separately, so we combined figures where possible (e.g. the original 2009 version of Resident Evil 5 and the 2016 re-release for PS4/Xbox One), but separated out remakes and HD remasters from the original games.

  1. Resident Evil 2 (remake) — 13.6 million copies;
  2. Resident Evil 7: Biohazard — 13 million copies;
  3. Resident Evil 5 — 12 million copies (includes sales of the original game and re-release for PS4/Xbox One), 14.4 million when adding 2.4 million units of the 2010 Golden Edition;
  4. Resident Evil 6 — 11.8 million copies (includes sales of the original game and re-release for PS4/Xbox One);
  5. Resident Evil Village — 9.3 million copies;
  6. Resident Evil 3 (remake) — 8.4 million copies;
  7. Resident Evil 4 (remake) — 7 million copies, including the updated data from Capcom;
  8. Resident Evil 2 (original) — 4.96 million copies;
  9. Resident Evil (HD remaster for PS3) — 4.1 million copies;
  10. Resident Evil 0 (HD remaster) — 4.1 million copies.

The original Resident Evil 4, released on GameCube in January 2005, has sold 1.6 million copies globally, and the PS2 version, released in December of the same year, added another 2.3 million units. When taking into account various ports and re-releases, the combined sales of RE4 would be over 13.1 million units across all platforms: GC, PS2, PS3, PC, Wii, Xbox 360, PS4, and Xbox One.

As of December 31, 2023, the entire Resident Evil series has sold over 154 million copies globally, remaining Capcom’s best-selling IP. It is followed by Monster Hunter (97 million), Street Fighter (53 million), Mega Man (41 million), and Devil May Cry (30 million).
