Renowned game designer Warren Spector will no longer be making games. He announced his retirement after 44 years in the industry.

Deus Ex: Mankind Divided

Spector shared this decision on LinkedIn. He emphasized that he is proud of his projects but feels it’s time to stop. Even though he has ideas for three more games (one very large, one very small, and one “frighteningly” complicated to create), he believes he has accomplished everything he wanted. Additionally, the industry has changed over the years, and developing games isn’t as fun for him anymore.

Moreover, Spector mentioned that he is already not young—he is 70 years old, and age along with health is taking its toll.

Let’s recall, this is not the first time Spector has left game development. He stepped away from game development in 2013 after the closure of Junction Point Studios, but returned to the industry three years later. Nevertheless, Spector is “almost certain” that he won’t change his mind this time.

Spector indeed has a very lengthy career. He began his journey in the gaming industry in 1983 with tabletop games and eventually transitioned to video games. During this time, he contributed to about two dozen titles, from several parts of Ultima to Epic Mickey, but he is best remembered for System Shock and Deus Ex.
