Facebook announced it would end new game submissions for Web Games on Facebook by December 31, 2020 and Gameroom will be closed entirely on June 30, 2021.

Both Gameroom and Web Games on Facebook are home to many Flash games that will be removed when Adobe and web browsers stop supporting Flash after December 31, 2020.

Facebook requested developers whose games are on Gameroom and Web Games  to notify the company where they would like to direct their players on a game-by-game basis. More information is available here.

On a related note, gaming publisher and web portal Kongregate.com announced it would no longer accept new web games. With Flash end of life approaching, the company has been updating its strategy to be “focused on our internal game development and acquisitions rather than our legacy flash gaming platform.” Existing games, however, will remain playable.

The updated strategy, unfortunately, has led to multiple layoffs among the Kongregate staff. The company spoke to Forbes and confirmed  “the difficult, but necessary decision to let a number of appreciated team members go.”
